What is a dhātu? ಧಾತು ಎಂದರೇನು?
Almost every Sanskrit word grows from a small root called a dhātu, usually a verb. For example √गम् (gam) means “to go”. From it come गच्छति “goes”, गमनम् “going” and आगत “come”.
ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತದ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಪದಗಳು ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಮೂಲ ಪದದಿಂದ — ಧಾತುವಿನಿಂದ — ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತವೆ. ಉದಾ: √ಗಮ್ = ಹೋಗು → ಗಚ್ಛತಿ, ಗಮನಮ್, ಆಗತ.
Kannada uses many of the same words: ಗಮನ, ಜ್ಞಾನ, ಧರ್ಮ, ಕರ್ಮ. You already know more Sanskrit than you think.
